A Small Gesture Goes a Long Way: Thanking the People Who Serve Us

Imagine being a server at a local restaurant or a cashier at the grocery store down the street. Imagine you work behind the service counter at the auto repair shop or make subs in the local sandwich shop. These, and countless others, are the thankless jobs that millions of Americans do every day.

If you've ever worked one of these jobs, you know just how difficult they can be. You've got to smile when others are being mean and be nice when others are being nasty, the days are long, and you're often only making minimum wage.

I worked in the service industry in one kind of job or another for almost 25 years before becoming a Realtor, so I get it. I also understand that I am very lucky to have the job I do, and that I get to choose the people I work with and the hours I work.

A Night Out with Friends

Curt and I invited some friends of ours to dinner, Clay and Rhonda Carroll. Clay happens to be a lender and Rhonda is a fellow Realtor. As a group, we decided we wanted to acknowledge our server and the hard work he does by leaving him a larger-than-usual tip. It's just a small way of giving back and showing appreciation for the hard work our service industry workers do, and for the patience and kindness they put forth every day.

Pass It On

Mostly, we'd like to encourage others to do something similar. It doesn't have to be monetary. Maybe it's just a compliment or a smile. Maybe you help someone lift something heavy or hold the door when their hands are full. Maybe you offer a bottle of water to the delivery driver or bake a casserole for an elderly neighbor.

Whatever you choose to do to brighten someone's day, remember that a small gesture can go a long way.
